Our universal scarer has been developed and refined over a period of two years and is based on our hydro-acoustic Seal Scarer. The sound produced by the Seal Scarer has proven to keep seals at a safe distance from sea farms and similar facilities, and since 1988 we have sold over 800 units. The only thing that can prevent the sound from keeping seals at a distance is if the effect is screened by surrounding rocks or other such solid bodies.

The universal scarer is based on the same underwater sound as the Seal Scarer, but now emits random sounds as opposed to the regular sounds made by the Seal Scarer. This means that the predator has difficulties in "learning" when it is safe to dive into the cages. Practical experience shows that the more disturbances the predator is subjected to, the greater the preventative effect. Consequently, we have included two additional scare effects on the surface.

The first of these is the sound made by hunting sea eagles. By generating this sound electronically, we can broadcast it from speakers at relatively high volume. In addition to this, we have installed a coloured catoptrical prism that rotates at the slightest breath of wind. The prism reflects sunlight and general daylight and changes character in step with shifting light conditions, which again ensures that seabirds in particular cannot get used to the effect. So far, observations indicate that cormorants, eider ducks and gulls shun this combination of sound and light. Eider ducks and cormorants approaching the cages under water will quickly be frightened off by the underwater sounds, which have the same effect on seals. We do not have sufficient evidence to assert that the Universal Scarer is equally as preventative with regard to otters, but we have received reports indicating that they too seem uncomfortable when in the vicinity of the new Universal Scarer.

Efficiency and Economy
So far, we have supplied the universal scarer to four shellfish facilities in southern Norway, together with two facilities belonging to Seafarm Invest on the island of Lovund, and feedback has been good. In addition to this, we have supplied two surface units alone to EVOS in Halsa who were having considerable problems with gulls at their feed silos.

We will never be able to guarantee this type of equipment as being 100% efficient, for that the behaviour of animals is too diverse and their motives for taking fish too varied. Furthermore, the hearing of some older animals may be defective. However, as mentioned earlier, we have sold over 700 Seal Scarer units to several countries all over the world, and we receive considerable feedback from satisfied customers. We are market leader in this field and practically 100% of Norwegian sea farms with seal problems have purchased our Seal Scarer. Many sea farmers have installed the Seal Scarer as part of their quality assurance programme, because it is easier to keep a predator away from the cages before it has developed a taste for fresh food, than to scare it away after it has become accustomed to hunting in the cages.

Other Areas of Application
Many trawlers and ocean-going fishing vessels have begun to use the Seal Scarer to keep seals and sea lions at bay when hauling in the catch. Some trawlers/long-liners also use the Seal Scarer to effectively keep whales, orcas and dolphins away from their vessels when hauling in the catch. As a result of successful application in this field, several fisheries companies have purchased our Seal Scarer since autumn 1998. Even so, we would like to point out that the Seal Scarer was not constructed for this purpose, and we cannot be held responsible for its efficiency in this area of use. As of today, we sell many Seal Scarers for use off the coast of Africa, and this autumn, our agent in Seattle will be launching a sales campaign targeting fishing boat owners in the USA/Canada. This year, a vessel from Møre fishing halibut off the coast of Greenland, will be testing our Seal Scarer in an attempt to keep sperm whales away from the boat while hauling the long-lines.
